1556 Shaanxi Earthquake; The Deadliest Earthquake in History

On January 23, 1556, during the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty, a catastrophic earthquake struck Shaanxi, Shanxi, and Henan provinces. Known as the 'Jiajing Great Earthquake,' it had an estimated magnitude of 8.0 and resulted in approximately 830,000 deaths, making it the deadliest earthquake in recorded human history.
