On March 10, 1912, Yuan Shikai took office in Beijing as the second Provisional President of the Republic of China, succeeding the resigned Sun Yat-sen. Subsequently, the political center of the Republic of China shifted from Nanjing to Beijing, beginning the Beiyang Government era.
