On November 24, 1924, following the Beijing Coup, Duan Qirui was appointed as the Provisional Chief Executive of the Republic of China, exercising the powers of the president. He abolished Cao Kun's constitution and attempted to seek a balance among various warlord factions but eventually lost power in the complex power struggles.
