In the summer of 1931, the Yangtze, Huai, and Yellow River basins in China (Republic of China) experienced catastrophic flooding. Continuous heavy rainfall caused river levels to rise sharply, inundating approximately 180,000 square kilometers. The disaster resulted in an estimated 3.7 million to 4 million deaths, making it one of the worst natural disasters in recorded history.
