Following Hiroshima, on August 9, 1945, the US dropped a second atomic bomb, 'Fat Man,' on Nagasaki, Japan. The attack caused devastating destruction and massive casualties. While the use of nuclear weapons remains a subject of intense debate, it effectively ended the plans of the Japanese Imperial headquarters for a 'final battle' on the home islands. At the time, secret manufacturing of chemical weapons was ongoing in islands near Hiroshima, a plan halted by the atomic deterrent.
