On November 12, 1970, the Bhola cyclone struck East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and India's West Bengal. It is the deadliest tropical cyclone ever recorded, with estimated deaths ranging from 300,000 to 500,000. The storm surge flooded many of the low-lying islands of the Ganges Delta, wiping out villages and crops. The Pakistani government's slow response to the disaster contributed to the civil unrest that led to the Bangladesh Liberation War.
