On May 20, 1972, Chiang Kai-shek was inaugurated as the 5th President of the Republic of China (his fifth term). Yen Chia-kan served as Vice President. This term saw major diplomatic setbacks, including the Republic of China's withdrawal from the United Nations in 1971 and the normalization of relations between Japan and the PRC in 1972.
