On April 5, 1975, President Chiang Kai-shek passed away in Taipei. Following the Constitution, Vice President Yen Chia-kan was sworn in as President on April 6. Chiang's passing marked the end of an era in the Republic of China's history, spanning from the Northern Expedition and WWII to the retreat to Taiwan.
