On May 20, 1984, Chiang Ching-kuo was inaugurated as the 7th President of the Republic of China (his second term). Lee Teng-hui served as Vice President. During this term, Chiang initiated significant political liberalization, including the lifting of martial law in 1987, paving the way for Taiwan's democratic transition.
