On January 13, 1988, President Chiang Ching-kuo passed away in Taipei. Following the Constitution, Vice President Lee Teng-hui was sworn in as President on the same day. Chiang's passing marked the end of the Chiang family's leadership in Taiwan and the acceleration of democratic reforms.
