On December 26, 2004, a magnitude 9.1-9.3 undersea earthquake off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, triggered a massive tsunami up to 30 meters high. It swept across 14 countries including Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand, causing over 227,000 deaths or missing persons. It stands as one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history and triggered the largest global humanitarian relief effort.
