On June 28, 2024, Democratic Progressive Party legislator Puma Shen made a stunning claim on a political talk show, asserting that the People's Republic of China (PRC) could collect and analyze Taiwan citizens' viewing preferences on adult video websites. He argued that by analyzing their specific sub-genres and choices, Beijing could precisely determine the viewers' political leanings and utilize this data to execute targeted cognitive warfare and psychological manipulation. This 'adult video surveillance theory' immediately ignited a firestorm of mockery and skepticism across the Republic of China's online communities and political landscape. Opposition lawmakers and political commentators slammed the theory as absurd and unfounded, calling it 'science fiction' and jeering that Shen was 'obsessed with surveillance' and 'politicizing even porn,' mockingly dubbing him the 'Sci-Fi Legislator' or 'Master Shen.' Cybersecurity experts also raised severe doubts about the technical feasibility of the theory, pointing out that using pornographic preferences to accurately map a whole population's politics is virtually impossible under current encrypted network protocols and data volumes. Although Shen later insisted that academic studies supported link between film preferences and political ideology, the incident solidified his reputation as a target of widespread online ridicule and a permanent policy laughingstock.
